The Mediterranean diet, included in the UNESCO List  of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is much more than a food pattern. It is a lifestyle involving a set of skills, knowledge, rituals, symbols and traditions that the people and communities throughout the Mediterranean basin have been creating for centuries around crops, harvesting, conservation, processing and the sharing and consumption of food. 

Eating together is the foundation of the Mediterranean cultural identity and a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

In our  itineraries and workshops with the chefs and the producers, we will tell you about this story visiting the markets, stages where this story takes place every day, tracing the origins in the archaeological museums, tasting the savors and experiencing the values of the Mediterranean diet: healthy lifestyle, hospitality, knowledge, rituals, traditions and recipes.

4 Days Med Food Experience with travel journalist  M.Laura Crescimanno and Michelin star Chef Martina Caruso

The stage of this itinerary is the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands, once the route of the ancient Carthaginians and the Romans and today a pristine UNESCO site. From the Milazzo harbor we disembark in Salina, the Aeolians’ greenest island, a lush verdant landscape shaped by two extinct volcanoes. 

Soak up the tranquil atmosphere of the small hamlet of Malfa and get a feel of remoteness, a sense that the rest of the world is a very long way away.

Our Casa Med on the island and your home for the next 3 nights is a white-washed beautiful resort. The owners cultivate the passion for the traditional and strong products of the island : capers, malvasia wine, prickly pears.



Arrive and take time to settle in your room. In the afternoon we will have a walk in the small timeless hamlet of Pollara, made famous by the movie Il Postino di Neruda. Before dinner we gather in the garden to meet your Aeolian hosts, Caruso family for an introduction about the workshop. Signum is a charming place and is like staying at home, they will introduce you their island, their land and the local produce. 

Dine on a 5 courses tasting menu paired with a wine route prepared by Chef Martina, of course.


We spend the morning in Signum’s kitchen. The workshop Discovering the healthy Mediterranean diet focuses on the Aeolian flavors. Led by the young home chef Martina Caruso, (she recently  has been awarded with a Michelin star !) you will immerse in the stories and secrets of the Aeolian cuisine. 

Learn how to create local recipes using the malvasia wine, the capers, the home-made pasta, the catch of the day, the garden-fresh produce and the seasonal fruits, a locally sourced and produced cuisine. 

In the afternoon visit to a winery where, guided by the owner, we will tour the vineyard and learn about the history of Malvasia wine, the aeolian wine still produced with the traditional techniques leaving the Greeks grapes laid out to dry on woven cane mats. 

We will later visit a local producer of capers, a SLOW FOOD presidium. This family-owned company has been producing capers for generation, striving to preserve this variety. We will discover how to cultivate it, how to harvest it, how to use it in cuisine. 

Dinner at leisure for your personal gastronomic exploration in one of the many seafood restaurants of the island.


This time the sea-salt, the olive oil, the wine and the bitter orange will be engaged in the body care ! Indulge in a morning at Signum SPA.

We spend the afternoon in Lingua where you can take part in the local ritual and stroll the tiny village and taste a renowned granita. You may also visit the two small and precious Ethno-Anthropological and Archaeological museums in Lingua.

Or finally choose the optional guided trekking and climb to the Aeolian highest point, Monte Fossa delle Felci. The two-hours ascent starts from an imposing 19th century church, passes through pine and chestnut woodlands and fields of ferns, all the way to the top. Once there the views are breathtaking particularly looking west towards the small islands of Filicudi and Alicudi.

Enjoy a delicious “Med” farewell dinner this evening.
