Special Tours - Kivrei Tzadikim Tours
Jewish Prague is not the only place in the Czech Republic with
glorious Jewish history. There are also other significant places with graves of
big Rabbanim there. For our clients who are interested in these personalities,
we can provide an expert guide with good knowledge of these places. The main
places are:
Nikolsburg/Mikulov
Town in Moravia, about 300 km from Prague, used to be the capital of Moravian
Jewry. Great personalities – such as the Maharal, the Tosafot Yom Tov and r.
Shimshon Raphael Hirsch were serving here as chief rabbis of Moravia. Unique
synagogue (the only one in the area of Central Europe built in so-called Polish
style) has been preserved. In the cemetery, which is the largest in the area,
are buried r. Shmuel Shmelke from Nikolsburg, r. Mordechai Benneth, r. Menachem
Mendel Krochmal (Tzemach Tzedek), and r. Gabriel Eshkeles from Cracow (Minchat
Yitzhak) and many others.
Pressburg/Bratislava
Capital of Slovakia. All the Sofer’s rabbinical dynasty used to serve here as
rabbis starting with r. Moshe (Chatam) Sofer. During World War II the old
cemetery was destroyed and only a small part with the graves of the most
important tzaddikim has been preserved. Among others, the Matzevoth of the
Chatam Sofer and r. Akiva Eger are to be seen here. In the new cemetery, the
tombstone of Ktav Sofer is to be seen.
Boskowitz
A Moravian provincial town, about 200 km from Prague. The local former Jewish
ghetto has been preserved here in its original structure. Because of its famous
Yeshiva, some great rabbinical personalities used to dwell in the town. One of
them is buried here – r. Shmuel ben r. Nathan Nata haLevi Kolin – the author of
the book Mahazith haShekel. A 350 years old synagogue, which has been currently
reconstructed, is also to be seen here.
Holeshov
Small town in Moravia, about 300 km NE from Prague. An old Jewish cemetery with
the tombstone of r. Shabatai ben Meir haKohen – the author of the Shach
commentary is located here. Besides hat, there is also a very unique synagogue
which has survived the war as a storehouse and its beauty was rediscovered only
about 40 years ago.
Kolin Small town in Bohemia, about an hour’s drive from Prague. About
four hundred years ago it was the second largest community in Bohemia after
Prague. Therefore, a big yeshiva was established here. The most important rabbi
of the town was the son of the Maharal r. Betzalel. In the later generations,
the author of the book Chavoth Jair, r. Elazar haKalir was also serving as a
local rav here. Matzeivoth of the both are to be seen in the cemetery. A
beautifully reconstructed 300 years old synagogue and big part of the ghetto
preserved in its original structure are locate nearby.
