Description:
Studley Priory, a member of "Small Luxury Hotels of the World", is situated
in 13 acres of wooded grounds in the delightful village of Horton-cum-Studley,
7 miles from the center of the city of Oxford. The house is advantageously
placed on a ridge giving views to the West of the Cotswolds, and to the East
along the line of the Chilterns and the Vale of Aylesbury. The Priory was a
Benedictine nunnery founded in the 12th century. At the Dissolution of the
Monasteries under Henry VIII the estate was purchased by the Croke family
and remained in their hands for 335 years. A private chapel was constructed
in 1639 and a North Wing was added in 1666. With these exceptions little
change has been made to the exterior of the house since the days of Queen
Elizabeth I. The main hall has early 18th century pitch pine panelling and
in the window panes late 16th and early 17th century stained glass show the
coats of arms of the Croke family. The bar is a cosy oak panelled room in
which to enjoy a cocktail before your meal. All public rooms have open log
fires during the Winter months. The Croke Restaurant offers award winning
(Two AA Rosettes) English and French cuisine complemented by an outstanding
wine list with a wide choice from the New and Old World. The Drawing Room
offers elegant surroundings for reading the morning paper, having afternoon
tea, or enjoying coffee and liqueurs after a delicious dinner. AA "3 Star".
