The Abbey of Sts. Severo and Martirio, today called "La Badia", was erected together with the ancient monastery in the VIIIth century and belonged to the Benedectine Monks and later to the French Prémontrés Canons of St. Norbertus Order. In the XIIth century Countess Matilde di Canossa ordered the construction of the tower with twelve sides, unique in the whole world, and enriched the Abbey with properties, allowing the ancient monastery to be enlarged, embellished, restored; the cloister and the guest-rooms were built on century later.
In this wonderful monument romanesque-lombardesque elements merge with the gothic style imported by the Prèmontrés Canons, notable frescoes of the XIIth, XIIIth and XIVth century embellish, moreover, the walls of the sacristy and the so called "Church of the Crucifixion". At the end of the XVth century the Abbey became "as commenda" a holiday resort for Cardinals: Pietro Barbo (later Pope Paul II), Nikolaus von Kues, Simoncelli, Borghese, Aldobrandini, Barberini, Altieri were accomodated as guests in the Abbey.
Since last century the Abbey belongs to an ancient and noble Umbrian family, Counts Fiumi di Sterpeto, who, after many years of careful and patient restorations, created a Hotel with exceptional comforts.
