HORSEBACK RIDING TOURS IN ITALY by Equitours

Touring Italy riding in TuscanySaints and Warriors
The Medieval Treasures Ride
(formerly called the Borgo Medieval Ride)

Feast of the Conquerors Ride

The fortresses and castles which were so important earlier, especially during the 15th century conflicts between Florence and Siena, are now partially in ruins. Much of the land is going back to nature, which is all the better for riding, and the soft beauty of the countryside is enhanced. These rides feature a real celebration of food and wine. Your hosts also run a delightful cooking school.

I was impressed daily with the attention to detail that our host, Vittorio Cambria, exhibited both at the castello where we stayed and the rest of the trail. This man is fascinating, excruciatingly funny and extremely conscientious. I had high expectations for this trip and they were more than fulfilled.

Itinerary Dated and Prices

SAINTS AND WARRIORS
Day 1: The group will be met at the Siena train station at 5:30pm. Dinner and overnight will be in the medieval hamlet south of Siena called Castello di Tocchi.
Day 2: After breakfast, transfer 1 mile to the stables of 'La Ripa' to meet the horses. Ride through the countryside to the village of Orgia. We will have lunch here feasting on the specialties of the area. The afternoon's ride continues through forests, vineyards and cultivated fields with views of typical Tuscan villages and castles on the hilltops.
Day 3: Ride toward the village of Murlo which was built hundreds of years ago upon an even earlier Etruscan town. The museum in Murlo holds many fascinating Etruscan archaeological treasures. It is currently collaborating with an American university to scientifically prove with DNA studies that the present residents are related to these "lost" Etruscans. After lunch the route follows an ancient road passing near Castiglion del Bosco, with opportunities for canters and gallops on the quiet roads past vineyards. The horses will remain at Bibbiano, and riders transfer back to Castello di Tocchi for dinner and overnight ( about a 30 minute drive).
Day 4: Today is the longest day of riding, covering about 30 miles. The trail lends itself to long canters across the fields of the 'Crete Senses' (Clay Hills), a wonderful contrast in landscape to the previous days' rides. The destination today is Montalcino, the fortified hill town most famous for its Brunello wine. A picnic lunch in Montalcino includes a chance to sample this delicious wine. The horses will stay at Bibbiano, and riders return to Castello di Tocchi.
Day 5: This day will be spent exploring the unspoiled Mediterranean forests, quiet villages and abandoned farmhouses on the route back to Castello di Tocchi.
Day 6: The destination for today is San Galgano Abbey, an inspiring structure which has been partially restored but remains open to the sky. The abbey, associated chapel, and beautiful surrounding valley will invoke images of the times of wandering knights and cavaliers. There will be plenty of time to learn about the area and hear intriguing tales over an Italian-style picnic lunch. Weather permitting, a leisurely afternoon ride proceeds along the Merse River for several miles where the overhanging branches create a green tunnel. Return to Castello di Tocchi for a memorable dinner and overnight.
Day 7: After breakfast depart Castello di Tocchi for the train station in Siena.

HOW TO EVALUATE YOUR RIDING ABILITY

This is a critically important first step in choosing a riding holiday. For most of the trips you must have a good knowledge of the basics and some experience in riding cross-country. Some important factors to take into consideration are:

We have rated the rides according to the level of equitation skill and physical fitness required to participate, as well as the pace. There are always variables involved, so when in doubt about how your riding ability measures up to the rigors of a ride, call or send us an e-mail. One of our ride consultants will gladly discuss it with you. It is generally best to estimate on the conservative side, especially if you haven't ridden with us in the past. The trek guide has full authority to exclude a rider from a trip for inability to ride or behavior which endangers the other riders or the horses. No refunds will be made under these circumstances.

Almost anyone can learn to ride well enough, but one must be prepared to make the effort. If you have a particular ride in mind, but do not meet the riding criteria, consider joining an instructional program where you can gain the necessary skills and confidence.

Unless otherwise stated, a weight limit of 200 pounds (90 kg) applies. English-style saddles are used on the majority of the overseas rides. However, there are numerous exceptions to these generalities.

E Beginner: A rider who has limited experience, is unable to post the trot and does not canter.
D Novice: A rider who is capable of mounting and dismounting unassisted, capable of applying basic aids, comfortable and in control at the walk, moderate length posting trots, and short canters.
C Intermediate: A rider who has a firm seat, is confident and in control at all paces (including posting trots, two point canters and gallops), but does not ride regularly.
B Strong Intermediate: An intermediate rider who is currently riding regularly and is comfortable in the saddle for at least 6 hours per day.
A Advanced: All of the above, plus an independent seat, soft hands, and capable of handling a spirited horse in open country.
