Hotel de France, Vienna

The Hotel de France is an elegant five star hotel in the very center of Vienna on the famous Ringstrasse, within walking distance of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg, Spanish Riding School, State Opera, the business and banking district, etc.

In 1872, the Hotel de France was built by two architects, Franz Fröhlich and Anton Ölzelt on the Schottenring. The following year, a World Exhibition took place in Vienna. Therefore, the hotel was named de France, to promote international flair which was considered very elegant and chic at that time.

In October 1876, the architect Anton Ölzelt attended a concern conducted by Bruckner in the convent of Klosterneuburg. He was so impressed by Bruckner's music that he decided to offer him an appartment in the Hotel De France in order to free him from his cramped rooms at the "Heinrichshof". Anton Bruckner gladly accepted and lived there until the summer of 1895. During his period, he composed some of his most famous pieces of music.

During the Second World War, the Hotel de France became an army-hospital. After the end of the war, the allied forces occupied Vienna and divided it into four zones. The Hotel de France, which was situated in the French sector, was their head-quarter until October 1955

In 1988 the hotel was generously renovated and new guest rooms were added on the 5th and 6th floor. In addition 3 conference rooms, the Atrium-Bar and 2 restaurants were inauguarated.

The Hotel de France, 130 years later, is delighted to welcome its guests from all over the world with most up-to-date hotel facilities and traditional Viennese hospitality.
