Hotel Restaurant Verrazzano, Greve in Chianti

The Hotel Restaurant Giovanni da Verrazzano is situated in the main square in Greve in Chianti, in the heart of Chianti Classico.
Its origins date back to Medieval times and make it one of the earliest places offering hospitality in the whole of Europe: as far back as in the year 1000 AD there is mention of a large market sited where the square is now, and in 1300 AD an inn already existed where the Hotel Restaurant now stands. The entrance, which remains the same today, was situated between the other two most ancient of institutions : the hospital and the church.
The Hotel Restaurant Giovanni da Verrazzano has 10 rooms, all offering something different : a view over the magnificent square, use of a terrace, a view over the rooftops which dominate the surrounding countryside. The building was last renovated in January 2002.
Today that same hospitality, combining a love of gastronomic traditions with a special regard to giving a comfortable and up-to-date welcome is offered to visitors from all over the world. When they return home, they take with them the memory of an incomparable sensory experience.
The cuisine is profoundly linked to this land of ours, as is the choice of wines : these range from the countless varieties of Chianti Classico to locally produced wines kept in barriques, from the Brunello di Montalcino to the Nobile di Montepulciano. The white wines too are a product of the Chianti area, but the chef have also selected several Vernaccie di San Gimignano.
Taking part in the courses laid on by the
Giovanni da Verrazzano Restaurant’s Tuscan Cookery School is a fascinating
experience: aspects range from learning to select the best quality basic
ingredients to choosing the appropriate wines, from the initial preparation to
tasting the finished product, putting theory into practice. The Tuscan Cookery
School reveals and explains the secrets of one of the best known regional
cuisines, which is also one of the best loved worldwide. The course can be
spread over a number of days – between 1 to 7 – and is suitable both for
individuals and groups. The latter are limited to a maximum of 10 participants,
and special arrangements are available.
