Pick up your rented medium size car in Budapest. Your destination is about 3-hour drive west of the Hungarian capital. Drive by Veszprém, the city with nearly 200 historic monuments. (About 9 miles from Veszprém is Herend, where the famous porcelain is manufactured.) On the way to Györ, visit the oldest Hungarian building in existence, the Pannonhalma Abbey. Rare documents and records from the earliest centuries of the Hungarian Statehood are preserved in the archives. The library consists of over 300.000 volumes among them more than 70 codices from the 11th century. The art gallery houses valuable, mostly 16th to 18th century works. Proceed to Györ, the beautiful Baroque city where Napoleon spent a night in 1809. Your accommodation for tonight is at the renewed building of the ancient Carmelite cloister in the historic center of the city. Dinner and overnight at the Klastrom Hotel in Györ. (B,D)
Day 3.

Sopron was awarded the Europe Prize - the international gold medal - for the protection of the monuments. 17 miles east of Sopron is Fertöd with the Eszterházy Palace, better known as the Hungarian Versailles. Köszeg - population about 12,000 - is also worth a visit. Walk around on Jurisics Square and visit St. James Church from the 14th century, the Ambrozy House and the Jurisics Castle. Visit the magnificent Baroque Palace of the Festetich family with its stunning library of 52.000 volumes, among them codices and numerous rare editions. Proceed to Pécsvárad.
