Constanta
The city of Tomis, founded by the Greeks more than 2500 years ago, became Constanta in the 6th century—renamed by Roman Emperor Constantine in honor of his sister. Along with Roman civilization came a period of Byzantine art and architecture. Later, the Turks were to dominate this lovely maritime hub, but the last three centuries have seen exclusively Romanian rule and an era of flourishing trade and commerce.
The Romanian Black Sea Coast, situated at the same latitude as Venice, the Côte d'Azur and Yalta, offers wide, hospitable beaches and summer resorts with enchanting architecture, as well as the opportunity to discover archaeological and art treasures. History blends with legend on these shores which saw the sailing vessel of the Argonauts depart in their search for the golden fleece. Here, more than 2,500 years ago, the Greeks founded the colonies of Histria, Tomis and Callatis. Traces of these ancient civilizations are well-preserved in museums and archaeological parks all along the coast. You will pass through main points of the city on your way to visit the National History and Archaeology Museum in Constanta which shelters the Treasury, displaying stunning statuettes unique to this part of the world. You will see a Roman warehouse structure dating from the 4th century AD, which incorporates a large piece of magnificent mosaic floor, the largest in southeastern Europe. Finally, a short visit to the seaside resort of Mamaia will allow you to take photos and admire the lovely view.
