The Spanish Higlights
|
If we begin to write of the wonders to be found in Spain and its cities, we could go on forever. Necessarily, we have had to limit ourselves, and in doing so have selected those cities that have rightly gained an international reputation as being exceptionally deserving of attention for any visitor. Madrid, Spain´s attractive capital, has gained a reputation as having one of the most active night-lives on the Old Continent, and some of the best museums in the world. Its plazas or squares are always bustling with people, whether it be Puerta del Sol at the city center, the majestic Plaza Mayor, the artsy Plaza Santa Ana or the sedate, aristocratic Plaza de Oriente. Whatever your mood, there are innumerable indoor and sidewalk cafes in these plazas, perfect to breathe in the city´s vibrant life. If the hustle and bustle of big cities is to your liking, you will love Gran Via with its shops, cinemas and theaters. If you prefer to quietly sip a glass of wine or vermouth away from the madding crowd, the centuries-old taverns in the Old Town are for you. If you prefer nature and tranquility, a visit to one of Madrid´s many parks is a must: Retiro, Botanical Garden, Casa de Campo, etc. If you like music, you are in luck. From opera in the newly-renovated Royal Opera House, to Jazz, Blues and, of course, Flamenco. Live, top-quality presentations are there for the picking. Barcelona, Spain´s second largest city and the most important on the Mediterranean coast, has since the ´92 Olympics acquired justly deserved fame as one of Europe´s most cosmopolitan and architecturally avant-garde cities. |

With its many museums, parks and historical buildings, there
is no end to the delights that awaits visitors. If gastronomy is your thing,
your taste buds are in for a treat, from traditional Catalan and Spanish to
International cuisine. A walk along the Ramblas with its thronging ¡crowds
as well as its book, bird and flower stalls, lunch in a restaurant
overlooking the newly rebuilt port area, a visit to Guell Park, the Sagrada
Familia, the Olympic Stadium installations on Montjuic ,etc. There is no
better way to spend a day in Barcelona. Undoubtedly, like the majority of
its visitors, you will
fall in love with this unique city. Seville, situated on the banks of
the Guadalquivir River and the most important port during the 15th and 16th
centuries conquest of the Americas and the capital of Arabic Al Andalus, is
a world apart. Its ancient districts such as that of Santa Cruz markedly
contrast with the modern structures built for Expo ´92. Spend an evening in
a centuries- old tavern listening to Flamenco, and an afternoon at the Plaza
de Toros (bullring) or a quiet stroll along the promenade of the river at
sunset. Breathe in the inspring Andalusian joy of living.
