Barcelona to the Basque Country

(Costa Brava-Girona-Pyrenees-Jaca-Pamplona-San Sebastian-Bilbao-Rioja to Madrid)

This route is designed to break with traditional tours, to present a Spain that the majority of visitors do not know exists: a Spain of high mountains, snow-capped peaks, green meadows and a gastronomy that is considered by many experts to be among the best and most varied of Europe. The route follows the sun, east to west, setting out from Barcelona, after visiting its numerous and well-known gothic and modernist treasures, its museums and restaurants, for Girona with its impressive Old City and "Call" or Jewishghetto. Then on to Besalu and its imposing medieval bridge, and its Jewish ceremonial bath, only three of which exist in all Europe. We enter the Pyrenees, stopping at some of its spectacular high mountain national parks, sanctuaries for many species of European flora and fauna, before descending to visit such cities as Jaca and Pamplona, the latter a favorite of Hemingway andwhere in July is celebrated the popular festival called San Fermin with its running of the bulls. From Pamplona, leaving to the north, we soon arrive at San Sebastian, one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, famous for its culinary art. Now we are deep in the Basque territory, visiting its industrial capital, Bilbao, with sufficient time to visit its new museum, the Guggenheim. We leave Bilbao behind, direction La Rioja Alavesa, where we can enjoy its exquisite local cuisine and visit some of itsmost prestigious wine cellars. On route to close-by Logrono, the capital of the province of La Rioja, we are sure to meet pilgims following the Way to Santiago, many on foot, bicycle or horseback. We can join them overnight in one of the ancient monasteries, before continuing on to Burgos, home to El Cid (not Charlton, the real one). After a visit to the city´s ancient sector and its magnificent cathedral, we head towards Madrid, a few hours away.
