New trip!
Hiking the Walser Trail
"The Great Walser Trail" is an amazing
network of trails through Switzerland, Italy,
Liechtenstein, and Austria connecting the
ancient migratory routes of the Walser, a people
of Germanic origin who crossed over high
mountain passes in search of sustainable land
and freedom from feudal lords. In the company of
trip leader extraordinaire Anna Bezzola,
we will explore these trails and remote
passages, following in the footsteps of these
hardy and determined people on their search for
freedom in a land of their own.
Our itinerary
takes us from the Goms, the easternmost region
in the Swiss canton of Wallis, over the Gries
Pass, across the Swiss/Italian border, and into
Valle Formazza, in Italy, the first Walser
settlement south of the Alps and the gateway to
subsequent migrations. We will skirt majestic
glaciers and alpine lakes and enjoy colorful
waves of wildflowers, and dramatic views of some
of the highest peaks in the Alps will provide
the perfect setting for our exciting journey
through centuries of history and culture.
