Iceland: Iceland Discovered

 New Trip! Hiking in Iceland
"Out of this world," is how MTS European Operations Manager Paolo Balduzzi described Iceland after his scout of this exciting new trip last spring. And the raves haven't stopped since. Simply put, Iceland has some of the most spectacular geography this planet has produced. Though its strange and majestic landscape looks ancient, it is recent in geologic terms (formed a mere 20 million years ago).

Our new adventure - another to add to our list of "great treks of the world" - features four days of spectacular hiking (with vehicle support) through the volcanic mountains of southwestern Iceland, home to some of the most dramatic scenery in the country. Nearly continuous daylight illuminates a pristine landscape of glacier-clad volcanoes, massive ice caps, thermal pools, remarkable waterfalls (the most impressive in Europe), and the largest lava fields in the world. Along the way you'll encounter the original Icelandic culture, the result of a long struggle between these courageous people and a demanding environment.

Itinerary; Hiking in Iceland

Days 1-2 - Fly to Reykjavik, Iceland. Transfer to hotel near Mount Hekla, the most active volcano in Iceland.

Day 3 - Hike past the Torfajökull caldera with its hot springs, steam jets, and bubbling mud pots. Vegetation is sparse but flowers dot grassy flats and riverbanks are lush with growth.

Days 4-5 - Hike through green hills, between mountain ridges, and across the Maelifellssandur, a black ash plain lying between Torfajökull glacier and the massive Myrdalsjökull ice cap.

Day 6 - Hike past Holmsarlon Lake, a turquoise beauty set among green hills, black volcanic desert, and white ice cap. Explore Eldgjá, the largest fissure on earth. End trek, drive along the Myrdalsjökull ice cap and across desert-like terrain to the tiny settlement of Vik i Myrdal.

Day 7 - Look for puffins and arctic terns; scenic drive to Reykjavik.

Day 8 - Fly home.
