Basque Country Gastronomic Tour
6 days 

This gastronomical program offers the traveller a first approach to the Basque culture and gastronomy.

Programme

Day 1: Arrival at your hotel, accommodation. Dinner on your own
Day 2: Bilbao, art and gastronomy
• At 9:30 a specialist gastronomic guide will meet us at the hotel to start the visit of Bilbao, where we will be able to see the modern extension of the city, with buildings made by prestigious architects like Frank O'Ghery, Norman Foster or Calatrava. We will end the morning by taking a walk around the streets of the old quartier, the Casco Viejo, the heart of the city.
• Lunch at the restaurant of the Guggenheim Museum directed by chef Josean Martiínez-Alija, within the gastronomical group Martín Berasategui that offers us a new Basque cuisine, in a unique setting.
 

• After lunch, we will visit the Guggenheim Museum's collection of contemporary art. This museum is one of the architectonic jewels of Bilbao, made of a structure of stone and titanium shaped like a boat, which the Canadian Frank O'Ghery designed as a tribute to the strong shipyard tradition of the city.
• It is possible to take a 30 minute guided visit around the outside of the Museum (optional).
Cooking demonstration by Daniel García, owner of the Zortziko restaurant, within his recently created Classroom of Kitchen and Wines. Dinner at the Zortziko restaurant of Bilbao that has a Michelín star.
• Return to the hotel.
 

Day 3: La Rioja
• At 9:30, we will leave the hotel towards the region of La Rioja Alavesa, in the south of the Basque Country, in the province of Álava. This region, is well-known by its magnificent wines and its important historical-artistic patrimony.
• When we arrive, we will visit a vineyard and a wine cellar where we will have opportunity to take a course on wine tasting, with which we will learn to know  Rioja Denomination of Origin wines.After this, they will offer us a small appetizer. Lunch in the cellar.
• In the afternoon we will visit Laguardia, a village of great military and commercial importance during the Middle Ages . 
• Return to Bilbao and dinner at the hotel. 
 
Day 4: San Sebastián
• Around 9:30, we will leave Bilbao in direction to San Sebastián, where we will have the opportunity to visit the Parte Vieja, the oldest district of the city. After visiting the most interesting sites of the city we will eat some pintxos, visiting some of the most authentic food places in San Sebastián.
• Lunch in the Sidrería Saizar, located 15 minutes away from San Sebastián, in Usurbil, where will be offered a typical cider house menu made up of codfish omelette,  fried codfish, veal chop, cheese with quince and nuts, accompanied by cider with txotx.
• After lunchm we will take a panoramic guided visit of the city where we will be able to admire the natural beauty of the Bay of the Concha, with the beaches of la Concha and Ondarreta or Monte Igeldo from where unforgettable views of the city can be enjoyed. The route around the modern city will take us to architectonic buildings of great value like the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, the bridges that cross the Umea, the Palace and the Park of Miramar, constructed by Mª Cristina or the architectonic set formed by the Theater Eugenia Victory and the Hotel Maria Cristina.
• Dinner at the Akelarre restaurant. Run by Pedro Subijana, one of the best cooks with an international reputation, offers an innovating cuisine to us, with views to the Cantabric Sea.
• Return to the hotel.
 
Day 5: The Basque Coast
• At 9:30 we will leave the hotel to begin a route that will take us across the Basque coast from where we will be able to admire spectacular views on the Cantabric Sea. Once we arrive to the town of Bakio, we will be able to enjoy a txacolí tasting that we will accompany with a appetizer.
Arrival to Gernika, where we will be able to visit its well-known house of Meetings and the Park of the Towns of Europe before eating in a typical restaurant, where we will taste a traditional meal of the region.
If the visit is on aMonday, we will be able to visit the typical product market that takes place weekly in that town.
• In the afternoon, we will have the chance to  see a demonstration of Pelota Vasca in a court.
• Return to Bilbao and dinner at the hotel.
Day 6:
• Breakfast at the hotel and end of our services

• 5 nights accommodation in Bilbao with breakfast in the city centre

• Cultural city tour of Bilbao
• Entrance and visit to Guggenheim museum
• Lunch at Guggenheim restaurant (with drinks included)
• Cooking class by Daniel García, a Michellin starred chef and dinner at his restaurant, Zortziko, in Bilbao (with drinks included)
• Excursion to Rioja with a complete visit to a cellar and its vineyards
• Wine tasting course with tapas
• Lunch at the cellar in La Rioja (with drinks included)
• City tour in La Guardia, Rioja
• Dinner at the hotel in Bilbao (with drinks included)
• Excursion to San Sebastian: cultural and gastronomic city tour with pintxos (tapas)
• Lunch at a sidreria with a complete menu (with drinks included)
• Dinner at Akelarre, one of the best restaurants in Bilbao (with drinks included)
• Excursion to the Vasque coast
• Txacoli (white wine) tasting with an aperitif
• Traditional lunch in Guernika
• Demosrtation of Cesta-punta
• Dinner at the hotel (with drinks included)

Not Included:
• Travel to and from Spain, and Bilbao
• Optional excursions, expenses and meals
• Transfers in and out the city
• Transfer to the hotel from the Zortziko restaurant
