Gourmet Culinary Vacations - for food and wine lovers

The "Slow Food" Movement
In 1986 the first Macdonald's opened in Rome's Piazza de Spagna, an event that sparked some controversy. After all, Italy is known best for good food that takes time. And so the "Slow Food Movement" began. The first such society was formed in Bra, not far from Verduno in Piedmont. By 1989 representatives from 14 countries had signed the register to mark the official birth of the organization. "The movement's philosophy focuses on enjoying local foods, wines and cultures slowly, with a generous dose of sensual pleasures, " says Margaret Cowan, author of "Your Guide to 110 Decadent Cooking Holidays in Italy". The emblem for such an organization? The snail. The "Slow Food Movement" has caught the attention of tour operators, which has designed packages to attract food-loving travelers.
